You may consider Frankfurt -> Munich -> Stuttgart -> Mainz -> Bonn -> Cologne -> (if you have time, you may want to visit Wittenberg, where Luther first started the religion revolution) -> Berlin -> Hamburg i.e. you first go south, then north, then east, then northeast.
